Tino’s Deli, Arthur Ave, The Bronx
Tino’s is one of my favorite places to stop on Arthur Ave. It’s my source for all sorts of Italian specialties including olive oils, balsamic vinegars, pastas, cheeses. It’s also my choice for lunch; they make great sandwiches (today’s was fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, hot peppers, fresh tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, and lettuce with olive oil and vinegar). They also make the best espresso on the Avenue. I’ve been shopping there for more than a decade and I was introduced to the owners, Giancarlo and Rosa Paolucci, by artist/chef/author Ed Giobbi. Loyalty pays off - just as I walked in this afternoon Giancarlo pulls me aside and tells me about this new goat’s milk ricotta salata that just arrived from Sardinia. Within moments, Rosa had cut off a slice to taste. In a word, well, there are no words. So you’ll just have to visit Tino’s and ask for Giancarlo or Rosa - and tell them Clay (Mr Chocolate Man) sent you.
